RPA Statement regarding Harlequins

RPA CEO Damian Hopley said: "Throughout this lengthy process the RPA has never deviated from advising Tom Williams to tell the truth, despite the enormous emotional stress he was under. Despite this pressure Tom has shown tremendous courage and determination in attempting to undo the serious error of judgement he made, albeit under instruction from his employer."

Tom Williams said: "I am relieved that this ordeal is over, and I can now concentrate all my efforts on making a successful return to playing later this year. I would like to place on record my sincere thanks to my family and friends and especially to Owen Eastwood at Lewis Silkin and Damian Hopley at the RPA for their unwavering support throughout this very difficult period in my life."

RPA Chairman, David Barnes said: "No player or employee should ever be put in such a compromised position again and if they are, then it is imperative that they must always tell the truth. The players have an increasing responsibility to act as role models for the sport, and must take a leading role in restoring the sport's damaged image and integrity. On behalf of my Board I would like to congratulate Damian Hopley for the excellent job he has done on behalf of Tom throughout this episode. Regrettably Damian has had to endure some extremely flawed observations from misinformed commentators in the press recently, but both he and Tom have withstood the pressure of public examination with dignity and composure."
