Victor Matfield, Bulls captain and Springbok lock has been elected as Chairman of the South African Rugby Players Association (SARPA) at its 11th Annual General Meeting. He takes over from former Springbok Hennie le Roux.
Bismarck Du Plessis, Sharks and Springbok hooker has been elected Vice-President of SARPA.
"It is a great honour for me to be elected as Chairman of SARPA as our association is an important stakeholder in South African rugby. It is also good to be back after I had to relinquish my previous position due to my overseas playing contract. Having served as President of SARPA before has given me a good understanding of my role and duties and therefore it is easy stepping into this position," said Matfield.
Piet Heymans, CEO of SARPA added: "With Victor's election it shows that the players have trust in and respect Victor what he stands for. I am looking forward to resuming my ties with Victor and by having Eddie Andrews, Victor and Bismarck as SARPA's top management team, it ensures that the players take responsibility and are directly involved with the affairs of the association."
Eddie Andrews, President of SARPA said: "Bismarck has served on the Executive Committee of SARPA for the past year and he is now a senior player whom the other players look up to, not just on the field but also off the field. Bismarck is a demanding player on the field but also off the field he is involved in a business and cattle-farming in the Free State. Therefore his willingness to serve his fellow players despite his busy schedule shows his commitment to SARPA."
Andrews also paid tribute to Hennie le Roux for his contribution as Chairman of SARPA during the past two years.
"Hennie played an important role within SARPA and has served the association well over the past few years in various roles. His contribution is appreciated by the members of SARPA," said Andrews.
